Art because it gives you a canvas to create something unique and science because it involves planning, research and rules of architecture. So what makes up a design.

The elements of Interior design.

1. Space

Space is the length, width, height of an interior. This space can either be positive or negative. Positive space is that which contains objects, while negative space is the open or empty space (including any space between objects). Attaining balance between the two is fundamentally crucial as it avoids overcrowding or sparseness.

2. Line

Lines help to shape a room and guide the eye. There are three types of lines; Horizontal, Vertical and Dynamic lines. Horizontal lines create a sense of stability, formality and efficiency. These lines are created by tables and other surfaces. Vertical lines, created by features like windows and doors, strike feelings of freedom and strength. Dynamic lines are diagonal, zigzag or curved lines and provide energy and movement.

3. Form

Form is the shape and configuration of something. In interiors, it is the shape of the room and the objects in it. Form can be geometric or natural. Geometric refers to hard lines and square edges, often looking man-made, while natural relates to more organic forms created by nature.

4. Light

Light is the natural agent that stimulates sight and makes things visible. In design, Light can be categorized into three; Task lighting, Accent Lighting and Mood lighting. The activity of a space is what determines the type of lighting to be used in that space. The incorporation of the wrong type of lighting can cause anxiety, tiredness, uneasiness, and even cause insomnia.

5. Colour

Colour is a science on its own, and is an extensively imperative element in design. It has the power to create mood, emotions, define unity and alter the perception of the dimension of the room. When choosing colour, it is necessary to consider the use of the space and all the activities that a space will be used for.

6. Texture

Design is not only about aesthetics but also how things and surfaces feel on our hands. Texture is the tactile finish of a surface or object. It comes in two forms, visual or actual texture. Visual is the texture perceived by the eye while actual texture is felt and has 3D characteristics. Texture ranges from soft, coarse, glossy, smooth. Fabric can be wool, velvet, cotton, fur, hide, leather, and are all differently perceived visually and actually.
