Color Psychology-meaning and representation of color

Colour allows us to interact with the world and has an oblivious ability to strike emotions and perceptions. Colour is a communication tool and should therefore be chosen consciously. Yellow, for example, would denote a sociable and exultant disposition while grey would connote a compromising, dreary and conservative mood.

Below is a list of colours and their association;


BLACK

  1. Black is associated with sophistication, elegance and luxury. It is often used as an accent as too much black can be dreary and overwhelming. The current trend in finishes and hardware is matte black.

  2. Black absorbs almost all the light making spaces look smaller. It is therefore used in the fashion industry to achieve a sliming effect.

WHITE

  1. It is a colour of purity and cleanliness, and often contrasts perfectly with black. This colour gives any space a relaxed and leisurely feel. It is perfect for small spaces as it makes the space seem larger due to its high light reflectance ability.

  2. White is the base colour in the trending Scandinavian style. White interiors feel fresh and modern. However, they can be bare and boring without accent pieces.

RED

  1. Red is the colour of passion and drama. It can attract the most attention and it is often associated with strong emotions such as love and anger. Red can also communicate danger and is proven to increase the heart rate.

  2. It is best used in areas where energy should be high such as construction sites.

BLUE

  1. Blue tones are associated with calmness and serenity.

  2. Deep navy or royal blues add a masculine feeling, while light or sky-blue hues are versatile.

  3. Blue reduces appetite as it rarely occurs in food. Eating on a blue plate can help when on a weight loss plan.

  4. Blue is: Calm, Peaceful, Secure, Stable, Reliable Productive, Sincere, Inspiring

YELLOW

  1. Yellow is often linked with sunshine, energy and happiness. It makes people happy and content and is therefore ideal choice for environments that aim at socializing and relaxation.

  2. It can spark creativity and encourage communication but also cause anxiety and stress if overdone.

ORANGE

  1. Orange hues are bright, fun and energetic. This is reasonably true since it is a combination of yellow and red.

  2. This colour can feel overwhelming when used in large quantities, nevertheless, softer peachy or terracotta shades can be cozy and calming.

GREEN

  1. Green brings to mind nature, balance and harmony. These hues are relaxing and comforting. It is often thought to represent tranquillity, good luck, health and even jealousy. Green can improve reading ability; laying a transparent sheet of green paper over reading material increases reading speed and comprehension.

  2. Deep emerald or hunter green can add intensity and elegance, while light spring or sage green is soothing and helps stimulate focus and creativity.

PURPLE

  1. This is a colour known for royalty, and can inspire creativity and spirituality.

  2. Deep rich plum or violet can add a bold, exotic flair, while light lavender hues are calming and pair well with greys and oranges.

PINK

  1. Pink is widely associated with feminism. However, it has gained popularity with the blush shades being in vogue.

  2. Muted blush or greyish-pink hues can immediately soften a room while darker hues such as magenta can add a punch of drama.

BROWN

  1. Brown is an earthy colour and therefore invokes feelings of comfort, security, stability and relaxation. It is a base colour in the Japandi style.

GREY

  1. Gray is a cool colour that is typically associated with meanings of sophistication, modernism, professionalism, stylishness and even dullness when used in darker tones.

  2. It represents neutrality and balance. Gray is the colour of complexity- anything that falls in between absolutes. It is a perfect neutral, as it can moderate brighter hues and pull a colour scheme together.
